Exia has published a white paper outlining the underlying research behind the Exia Play product.

This research paper considers the alarming failure rate of software projects and the failure of project management tools to stem the tide. We consider what kind of tool might help to increase the success rate of software projects. We believe that while the features of the tool are important, the underlying characteristics of the tool are even more important. We identify five such characteristics—flow, communicative transparency, process guidance, visualizations and integration—and argue why these characteristics are important in software-specific project management. Finally we consider what a tool might look like that implements these characteristics.
